Free time

So after two years of serving on the management council of my condo, my term came to an end yesterday. It's been a frustrating year, however I did manage to implement a fully democratic system into a council that had historically been run as a dictatorship.

We were overwhelmed with the turnout at the AGM, there had also been some studious proxy harvesting, meaning that all of the outgoing council's suggestions for management fund increases etc (in line with the rising cost of services) were voted down. This means that the new council has insufficient funds to run the condo this year. Interesting. This was local politics gone wild, with one rogue council member spreading misinformation and rallying his troops. We had booing, verbal abuse and a lot of angry voices. After 8 and a half years here, I finally came to properly understand the local political mentality. And it wasn't pretty. Lesson learned.

As a result of no longer having this unpaid part time job, I forsee that I'll have more free time... I'm looking forward to it!

#plasticfreejuly

In the spirit of reducing plastic this month I've made a couple of great discoveries. A local (NZ) meat and milk provider, that I've been using for a couple of years on account of them selling milk in glass bottles which they collect and reuse, has started selling their meat in compostable packaging. Their meat also just happens to be mighty tasty and they deliver to your doorstep. A great way to reduce 5 or 6 plastic meat trays and associated cling wrap each week. This company are also great to deal with online https://eketahunacountrymeats.co.nz/

Barra brith and being blessed

Barra Brith They say you start 'nesting' when you are pregnant, well, it's true - I've been into baking these last couple of weeks. Today I decided to make Barra Brith (Welsh tea loaf) for my colleagues, since it is my birthday. What a disaster! First it overflowed, surgically welding itself to the intereior of our oven, then it burnt on top whilst remaining raw on the inside, then it rufused to be extracted from the loaf tin. I wouldn't be surprised about any of this with my track-record in baking, but I made exactly the same thing using exactly the same recipe last week and it was 100% successful. It still tasted great though - once I managed to extract it from its tin. I'm not, however, looking forward to dealing with the oven! That can wait until the weekend. Hard times I've had a number of emails from friends recently telling me of the death of close friends and accidents that people have had; it has made me realise just how fortunate and blessed we are...
