Bangkok








Bangkok is dirty, noisy, smelly and hot. That said, it has some beautiful temples and interesting markets. The main purpose of our long weekend was to go to our friend Glen's marriage to Pat. The wedding was massive and was in a very smart hotel in central Bangkok. The speeches were touching and Pat looked gorgeous.

We stayed in a charming boutique hotel called the Wendy house, it's in central Bangkok and very reasonably priced. The breakfast was great and set us up for the day. The only downside was the four storey climb to our room. This, accompanied by the fact that to get anywhere by public transport in Bangkok means scaling about fifty steps, meant that we got a good workout this weekend.

Our highlights were the temples (Grand Palace, Wat Po and Wat Arun), the canal tour and the enormous, sprawling Jatujak market (with 15,000 stalls selling just about everything you can imagine). By Sunday afternoon we were exhausted and treated ourselves to half an hour's reflexology - just what we needed.


One noticeable thing about Bangkok is the number of monks in their bright saffron-coloured robes, you see them everywhere. There are even signs on the trains asking you to give up your seat should a monk need one. The picture here was the best monk shot I had.



This flower is one I see all the time in Singapore and I also saw it in Bangkok, I've no idea what it's called - answers on a postcard please...it feels kind of like marshmallow and smells lovely.


I also love this one, I think it's a pink sonata, but I'm not sure - again, answers on a postcard please.


Weekend breaks are great...until you get home on Sunday night and realise you have work the next day. We are currently undergoing refurbishment at the school, and it's really unpleasant. This morning I arrived to a strong smell of paint, glue and cement dust. All the furniture had been removed and the floors were grey cement in readiness for the flooring. Not pleasant. Teaching, however was fun - we have a great set of students at the moment, it makes life so much easier.

HI Caille (&Paul) - its hard to keep up with all you've been up to as there's always so much on your blog (not a complaint - its great to hear all your news!)
My favourite pic though has to be the caterpillar at the light ceremony - love it!

Buses, bats, bites and other bits

I know I've been writing a lot about Singapore recently, but I guess that's what happens when you've lived in a new culture for a while. I've become very aware of what's around me. I get the bus to and from work every day. It costs around 15p and is fully air-conditione d. Most of the time I get a seat, it's brilliant. Today was a special day - I boarded a bus that was driven by the world's most friendly bus driver. He greeted each passenger and said good bye to everyone who got off. Sadly I was the only person to notice of the 40-50 passengers that recieved this star treatment during my journey. So I gave him a big grin and a wave as I got off the bus. I love how something like that can add an extra smile to your day. I'm currently learning Mandarin (week 2 of a 10 week course). Friends

I know, I know, it's been a while since I wrote, but life has got very busy recently. We currently have our friend Al French staying with us, he's moving to Hong Kong for a year and he's on a work trip here right now. It's great to see him again, and as always with good friends, it's as if we just saw him last week (in reality the last time we saw him was at our wedding last year). Anyway, as I said, we have been busy. What with Mandarin, Alpha, work and a trip to Malacca I don't seem to have had a free moment in the last three weeks. Malacca was great, it was good to leave Singapore for the weekend. The only downer was returning home to find that our debit card had been skimmed and we'd had money stolen...oh well, it looks like we'll get it back. Malacca had awesome food and it was a fun city to spend a couple of days in. Information overload

There is so much to learn about looking after a new baby. Everywhere you look seems to offer slightly different advice. I guess because I have some time on my hands at the moment I am reading quite a lot and talking to a lot of friends who have young children. It's amazing what there is to learn...and I'm sure most of it can only really be learnt 'on the job' as it were! That said, I'm thoroughly enjoying the reading and research into the various different things we need to know/buy/do/not do. I'm also loving having the time available to do them. Even more I love the fact that I can feel the baby kicking on and off throughout every day. Life really is a miracle.
